What we've been up to in the last week

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Content, Data

Here are some of the things we've been doing in the last seven days:

Content

We've been sprinting on further PAYE content, including what to do when taking on a new employee, and what to do when an employee leaves.

We've also been looking at some of the specialist needs around VAT imports and exports, and the kind of content that could help meet those needs.

Several members of the content team attended a joint workshop with HMRC, Charities Commission and GDS staff working on the transition of agency and ALB content, to look at user needs for charities and tax.

Data

Oliver has been looking at a new feature, recently introduced on GOV.UK, that allows users to see a preview of a CSV file without having to download it.

Much of the HMRC transparency data is in CSV format, so this feature should help people find what they’re looking for. You can read more about it in his blog post.

Product

We had a workshop with HMRC looking at how we deal with the content in the Paying HMRC topic with an intelligent tool that meets user needs.

We continued making improvements to the design work on the alpha of the contacts application for GOV.UK. This is a replacement for the HMRC Contact Us and will provide a way to find all the public facing government contacts, not just HMRC.

The same system will be usable by any department or agency that has public facing contact details, but the focus of the development is with HMRC and the HMRC transition team for now. We are aiming for a public beta in February.

There are some really exciting ideas for this project and Diane Oliver from HMRC will be blogging very soon about the work she has been doing.

We have also been working on user feedback and running user research sessions on the content published around the Autumn Statement. As we blogged before, we are working on how to improve this and ensure that the user experience is improved for the Budget in March.

Yesterday we welcomed  Michael Howes-Roberts from HMRC into Aviation House. This was his first visit since taking on a new lead role for HMRC on the project in December.  He spent the day meeting the transition team and many others across GOV.UK.
