What we've been up to in the last week

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: API, Content, Data, HMRC Manuals, User research

Here are some of the things we've been doing in the last seven days:

Content

We've been sprinting on content production for PAYE, including new smart answers for registering as an employer and taking on new employees. We've also been working on revised tax help content based on feedback from representatives of the tax and accountancy professional bodies.

We also supported HMRC with publishing content onto GOV.UK as part of the Autumn Statement. This was the first time that the Autumn Statement had been published directly onto GOV.UK. A great effort by the HMRC web team, especially Suzanne Meek, to deliver content on a new system under tight time pressures.

We've already identified some aspects of GOV.UK that need improvement so that the user experience is better around events such as the Autumn Statement. We'll be blogging more about this and working with users to improve it before the budget.

User research

Stephen, Oliver and Jaimes joined colleagues in HMRC for a visit to the HMRC's contact centres in Glasgow and East Kilbride and learned about the types of enquiry they receive and how they are answered.

We also held some user research sessions for PAYE for employers and a workshop with users to test the alpha build of a new contacts application for all of GOV.UK which will replace the existing HMRC contact us.

Product

We held joint GDS and HMRC workshops to explore the work we need to do on GOV.UK to support all the HMRC forms and tools that will be moved across. We also ran a user needs workshop for the publishers of the HMRC manuals to understand their user needs for a new publishing system for the HMRC manuals.

We also welcomed visitors from various tax and legal publishers who were keen to learn more about HMRC transition and how the GOV.UK API can be developed to make it easier for them to reuse the content published by HMRC on GOV.UK.

Training and communications

Michael has been out and about helping to train new users in the GOV.UK publisher and developing user needs skills. Michael has also been working with HMRC to develop a framework and strategy for stakeholder engagement.
